Biofloc is a technique and method to improve the quality of water in aquaculture by the balance of nitrogen and carbon within the system. If nitrogen and carbon are in a balanced solution, the ammonium that is added to organic nitrogenous wastes will transform into bio-based biomass by bacterial organisms.

This technique improves the water’s quality by adding carbon into the aquaculture system via external carbon sources or increased carbon content in the feed. The nitrogen-uptake that is facilitated through bacterial growth reduces ammonium levels more rapidly than Nitrification. Bio floc technology allows you to limit the water exchange and use in aquaculture systems, by ensuring an adequate quality of water within the unit, while also creating bio floc that is low-cost and that is high in protein. This is then used as a source of food for aquatic organisms.
